When I started the series, I didn’t realise that there were only 4 episodes, because normally a Netflix ‘limited series’ is 8 episodes! So, the finale episode! There was a satisfying ending, but I want more...but that is also a good thing, I wanted to see Etsy (Shira Haas) find herself and see her personality come to life and if she got the scholarship! These unanswered questions will drive me up the wall, but there was still a satisfying ending all the same. The finale saw Etsy finally go to see her mother, Leah (Alex Reid), at her flat and go to her audition at the music school, however she sang instead of playing the piano. Meanwhile, Yanky (Amit Rahav) goes to Leah’s to find out if she is hiding Etsy, but at this time she is not. Moishe (Jeff Wilbusch) finds Etsy again and threatens her, saying she will have to come back to the community as she won’t survive the real world, with her baby and no education or money. Yanky and Leah go to Esty’s audition and Etsy sees Yanky and they speak, but she decides it is too late for them to get back together and instead leads her own life.

What We Learnt:
Yanky finds out that Moise has found Etsy and shows him the photo he took of her in the club
Yanky also is shown the picture of the audition letter and goes to confront Leah
Meanwhile Etsy’s adopted mother and Yanky’s mother discuss Etsy and Yanky’s marriage
Etsy’s adoptive grandmother dies, and Etsy doesn’t know about it
Etsy sees Moishe stalking her and tries to run but is kidnapped and taken to a playground
Moishe tells Etsy all the Jews that have died and she must come back with them, handing her a gun to kill herself if she doesn’t
Etsy goes to see her mother at her apartment
Leah reveals she was in the same situation and Etsy was taken away from her, she did not abandon her
Etsy goes to her audition and sings instead of playing the piano
Leah and Yanky watch Etsy’s performance
Etsy sees Yanky waiting for her after the audition and speaks with him
Etsy tells Yanky it is too late after he asked for a divorce
Etsy meets her friends in a coffee shop to start a new chapter in her life
I thought this episode and the series was well paced, there was a clear story and arch with the characters which was great. Additionally, the ending was a satisfying one, like I said earlier I just wish we could see Etsy grown into her own and see her flourish with this new life, however I guess that will be left up to our imagination. Finally, I think this series really opened my eyes and helped me emphases with the Jewish community and educated me in their ways which was nice to see. Netflix are going a great job of bringing diversity and religious stories to its catalogue, whilst being sensitive. I think a second series would be great to see her story and character progress, but I think the limited series told a strong story in a short amount of time and a second series might damage that. A must-see!
Available to stream now on Netflix.
