Unorthodox - Episode 2 RECAP 💎💎💎

(May Contain Spoilers)

This episode was full of emotion and showed us Etsy’s (Shira Haas) personality and more about her story. The more I watch this programme the more I love finding out about a community I have little knowledge of. I think Etsy is very brave and it was heart-breaking to see her new friends belittle her. The story hasn’t picked up very much, but I gather this series will be a slow burner and one that is thought-provoking. This episode saw Etsy apply for a scholarship at the music school where she met her friends in episode one. Yanky (Amit Rahav) and Moishe (Jeff Wilbusch) make their way to Berlin, but Moishe spends most of his time betting than trying to find Yanky’s wife. The episode also flashbacks to Etsy and Yanky’s wedding day.

What We Learnt:

  • Etsy gets caught sleeping in the music school

  • Etsy has lunch with the university professor who tells her about the scholarship, which Etsy applies for

  • Yanky and Moishe make their way to Berlin and go to Etsy’s Mother, Leah’s (Alex Reid) house Etsy goes shopping and tries new clothes

  • Etsy gets invited to dinner by Dasia (Safinaz Sattar)

  • Yanky and Moishe go to a hotel where Moishe receives a parcel, which Yanky opens in secret and finds it’s a gun

  • Moishe has a betting problem and asks Yanky for money

  • Etsy goes to the dinner and confesses more about her life and why she ran away as she felt god asked too much of her and she didn’t fit in

  • We learn Etsy is 19 years old

  • Etsy’s friends ask her to play piano and she does, but they tell her she won’t get the scholarship

  • Etsy runs out and calls her Grandma (Dina Doron) who hangs up the phone

  • FLASHBACKS: Leah comes to visit and tells Etsy she has German citizenship if she wants to escape

  • Etsy and Yanky get married

During the wedding women and men are separated and Etsy is covered in a thick veil. They dance a lot I think we are beginning to see Etsy come into her own as she begins to learn new ways of life, like eating bacon for the first time! At the moment as Yanky is so nice and wimpy I can’t understand why she left yet as he is doing everything to get her back. It will be interesting to see more flashbacks of their marriage to see why she wanted to leave. I am looking forward to how the story progresses.

Available to stream now on Netflix.
