Noughts + Crosses - Episode 4 RECAP 💎💎💎

(May contain spoilers)

The main thrust of the narrative in this episode was the aftermath of the explosion at the hospital, a bomb that brother Jude (Josh Dylan) planted. Callum (Jack Rowan) rushed into to warn Sephy (Masali Baduza) who was caring to her mother’s side after she attempted to take her life, however Callum was too late, and the bomb exploded. However, the bomb only killed two hospital workers and with the big bang it made last episode I would have at least thought that it would have killed a few more! Kamal (Paterson Joseph) makes a public announcement that his family is being targeted and he will find who has committed the crime and bring them to justice.

A distressed Sephy pleads to Callum to tell her if he knows who planted the bomb. His silence causes tension between the couple. Sephy confesses to Kamal that she might know something, this however results in Callum getting arrested and tortured my policemen to get the story out of him. Ryan (Ian Hart) Callum’s ‘dad urges Jude to tell him what has happened. In rage Ryan goes to Liberation Militia (LM) and argues with Jack (Shaun Dingwall) as he asked Jack to keep Jude out of it. Ryan goes to the police to give himself in to save Callum. Sephy and Jasmine (Bonnie Henna) hear the news and rush to Meggie’s (Helen Baxendale) aid and insist on paying for Ryan’s lawyers. The trial results in Ryan getting the maximum sentence of 30 years but was close to being executed. Meanwhile Kamal visits Yaro (Luke Bailey) and we find out his secret about his illegitimate son. Finally, Sephy and Callum after fighting throughout the episode, makeup and get back together which Meggie is happy with although when Kamal finds out is left in dismay.

I thought this episode was good, however there seemed to be a disconnect with the characters for me. The acting seemed to be played differently to how it was before and the relationship between Sephy and Callum (I know they were fighting) but seemed more distant and forced. I feel like the storyline is heading in a great direction and I it is getting deeper into deceit and on the brink of war, but there was something about backtracking the characters behaviour or intensions in this episode which got me stuck. I thought the court scene was beautiful and again, I am loving seeing culture on our screens, the African headdresses and garments are colourful and light up the screens. I am looking forward to seeing the last two episodes as I don’t see how they could sum up all the loose ends so quickly, which might mean another series! Fingers Crossed!!

Film Footnote: This episode and the next two are directed by Koby Adom. This was Koby’s directing debut for British television drama and he smashed it! I was lucky enough to meet him at the BFI Futures Film Festival in 2018, he was so humble and lovely, I have followed his work ever since. His short House Girl is beautiful, and captivating and his recent short Haircut is gripping and emotional. Watching his content, you can see his talent and why he was chosen to direct this BBC drama. I think he has done an amazing job and if you like this episode it is worth checking out more of his content as he is an up-and-coming talent, I’m sure this won’t be the last we see of Koby.
