Warrior Nun (2020) REVIEW - 💎💎💎💎

(May Contain Spoilers)

My first thoughts on this series is HANNA (2019-) but with nuns instead of trainees. There is a huge coming-of-age element in this film which I love, but with the Sci-Fi addition much like Stranger Things (2016-) making it slightly more unique. The other striking thing about this series was Alba Baptista who looks like a young Natalie Portman and her acting is on par! I loved the tone of this series being sarcastic and teenage angst. There were some moments where I was screaming at the TV being like ‘but how does that work if XYZ knows this or can do this’, whatever it was it was clear to me that the markers hadn’t questioned their own concept and there were a lot of unanswered questions. The last thing...CHEEKBONES, why do all the nuns have such perfect bone structure!

After sister Shannon (Melina Matthews) is assassinated the nuns make their way back to the church but the magic angle halo that is the source of magic power needs to be taken out the dying body and placed in a new host. However, demons ascend on the church and the woman with the halo puts it in a corpse body to keep it safe. The corpse, Ava (Alba Baptista), wakes up and realises she has these magic powers and runaway, much to her surprise as in her past life she was paralysed after a tragic car accident which left her orphaned.

Ava, after escaping, wants to live her life as she has been given a second chance. This is when Ava bumps into JC (Emilio Sakraya), a guy travelling with friends breaking into rich people’s apartments, JC helps get Ava to her feet and feeds her. The nuns are after Ava for the halo that they want back. Additionally, Jillian (Thekla Reuten) who runs experiments trying to open a portal to heaven also wants Ava found as she possesses power to keep the portal open. Ava begins to find out more powers that she has from the Halo including phasing through walls, seeing demons and exploding her surroundings.

When the church captures Ava they try to train her and inform her about her powers, some believe she has been chosen and others think she is not worthy as a non-believer and was not the next in line. After Ava runs away AGAIN, Shotgun Mary (Toya Turner) is tasked with retrieving her to complete her Halo duties, however sister Lilith (Lorena Andrea) is also tasked by the Cardinal (Joaquim de Almeida) to kill Ava so she can claim the ring for herself as she was next in line. Ava is eventually caught up by the two sisters and Mary lets her make her own decision, however hoping Ava will come back to the convent and do the right thing…..which she does. Before Ava goes to the church she visits Jillian for her to run tests to find out what she is, however Jillian uses it for her own good as she wants to open the portal to heaven so that her sick son and her can live together without pain.

Finally, as the Pope is on his death bed the position is up for grabs and the Cardinal is the replacement, however Mary doesn’t like it as she thinks he is the person who ordered the attack on Shannon and he wants the power for himself. The nuns discover that the angel to whom the Halo belongs is buried under the Vatican and it’s his bones keeping demons on earth. Ava breaks into the tomb, but discovers that the angel is very much alive but isn’t an angel at all, he is the cause of evil. As Ava has been in the tomb for a while the nuns blow it up to help her escape, however release the angel as well, which causes havoc and it is revealed that it was Father Vincent (Tristan Ulloa) who was working for the angel and the plan was to get him to escape.

The ending of the series was a bit of a kick in the balls! I can understand why they did it, but it ended with a slap bang at the start of the big battle! This frustrated me, however makes me look forward to another series. Additionally, I did see the ending coming in terms of father Vincent being the helper as he was acting dodgy throughout and I didn’t trust him! I feel like I want to dislike the series but there’s something about it that makes me love it, so I’m sure this will be a marmite show! Funny, Entertaining and Mesmerising.

Stream the full series on Netflix.
