Tiger King is one of the best docuseries that I have seen in a long time! It has created quite the storm on social media with memes and everyone is blaming Carol F***ing Baskin for everything! I found this series captivating, because the different stories and people’s opinions, little by little more information about these people – which you thought you knew – where now being revealed! The big major plot points for me was:
Joe Exotic’s and Carol Baskin’s feud, resulting in millions of lawyer fees
Accusations that Carol killed her husband Don Lewis and fed him to the lions
Jeff Lowe “saved” Joe and the zoo bailing them out, but stole it instead
James Garretson and Jeff plotted with the feds to get Joe sent to prison for plotting to kill Carol!
There of course there were more plot lines that impacted your views on the contributors, such as Travis Maldonado suicide, because he felt trapped by Joe. Carol, who was never found guilty of killing her millionaire husband, but changed his will leaving his ex-wife and daughters with less than 10% of his assets! There were so many subplots, which is one of the reasons that the series was as interesting as it was. For sure, the series focused more on the people and the animals were also a subplot, the breeding and petting, as well as Carol trying to pass an act to stop people from keeping exotic animals, however hypocritically she owns a “sanctuary” which is more like cat prison!
I was amazed how the filmmakers were able to get as many willing contributors to speak on film, they had police, federal agents and mothers who had lost their son, the more entertaining aspect was that they might have only been introduced in one episode about a specific matter to emphasize a point, like Travis’s death. Think thought-provoking docuseries had many people taking to Twitter to discuss their opinions, one of the most famous was Cardi B, who claimed she wanted to create a Crowdfunder to get Joe out of prison.
I definitely think that there was foul play in Joe’s arrest and sentence, Jeff and James – if the conversation to kill Carol took place – they are accessories to murder surly. Jeff is a sneaking man, but interestingly enough it was revealed that the filmmakers were going back to meet him to do a bonus episode for Netflix, which will be out in the subsequent weeks. Finally, these exotic animal’s owners all seem NUTS! I don’t think any of them are in the right and most of them at some point have been in the wrong. I think it is sad that the animals have been breed for a life in a cage, but ironically now Joe is in one of his own.
I’ve rated Tiger King so high, because it made me think throughout, it made me want to watch more – to the point where I binge watched the rest of the series! – and it made me feel like a detective working out how Joe went to prison alongside the doc. Tiger King is mad, powerful and entertaining!
