The Sinner (2020) REVIEW - 💎💎

(May Contain Spoilers)

Wow that was disappointing!

I was looking forward to watching this series so bad as I have been a fan of series 1 and 2, but I have not been let down like THIS in a very long time. The series cinematography and style was still great, but the storyline wasn’t as interesting or engaging as the last series’. The one thing that I think this series got wrong is no surprises, the audience knew pretty much EVERYTHING from episode 2, that they needed to know. The heavy involvement with Harry (Bill Pullman) was expect, but granted they did take that a little further in this series. The Sinner series 1 and 2 showed you who the killer was from the first few scenes which made it innovative, because you wanted to invest in the series to understand WHY they did it. However, this season we knew Jamie (Matt Bomer) ‘did it’ but I didn’t care why.

Jamie has got his life together, he has a good job as a teacher, a beautiful wife at home and a newborn baby on the way. BUT, he craves something much more. Enter Nick (Chris Messina) a mysterious man who is revealed to have been a college friend of Jamie’s. Back in the day the two boys were inseparable and have beliefs that they shouldn’t be scared of death but face it and they will feel real life. This is revealed with a few flashbacks showing Nick encouraging Jamie to risk his life jumping off bridges and burying each other alive.

One night Nick turns up to Jamie’s house and on their way back they are in an accident, in which Nick dies. Later revealed that Jamie let his friend die as Nick had the intention of the two going and killing a random woman, Sonya (Jessica Hecht), which would help them to feel alive. As Jamie didn’t agree he caused a crash and let Nick die. Harry gets very involved within the case and suspects something more. Jamie asks for Harry’s help and he tries to admit him to a mental hospital but escapes. Jamie is then found at a party and is supervised by Harry. After Harry drops Jamie at home, Jamie sneaks back out to the party and kills someone else.

In addition, Jamie has been telling his brightest student to not go to college, causing a rift between him and the school. Leela (Parisa Fitz-Henley) separates from Jamie as he starts going a bit crazy and later confesses to her he had killed people. Harry meets up with Jamie again and they play the same game that Jamie and Nick played as teenagers and Jamie buried Harry alive. Obviously, Jamie let Harry out again, although, was given the illusion this wouldn’t happen and therefore Harry burnt a signed confession from Jamie as per their agreement. Harry records Jamie’s confession on a mobile anyway and then is taken to court, but let off as Harry went to parties with him and recorded him without his knowing. Jamie then felt betrayed and went after everyone Harry loves. Harry finds Jamie and shoots him with a shotgun.

Yes, I ended this review abruptly, because recapping what happened really pissed me off. The series was SOOO predictable. Thinking about series 1 and how well that was done. There were bits of flashbacks but not the whole thing, little by little was revealed. Unlike this series which gave you all the parts and it just felt so predictable and out of character for Harry as well. VERY disappointed with this series. I think if it turned out to be a Flight Club (1999) scenario where Jamie was Nick, or Jamie was the one pushing. As well as it not being Jamie that helped Harry out of the grave. I do, however, think that the ending of Jamie going after Harry’s loved ones redeemed the series a bit, but Harry killing him was predictable and made it all feel like a waste of time. Disappointing, predictable and discombobulating!

Stream series 1-3 now on Netflix.
