My Left Nut (2020) REVIEW - 💎💎💎💎

Hilarious and ball hair raising! My Left Nut is adapted from a play by Michael Patrick and Oisín Kearney, which toured Ireland and Edinburgh Fridge Festival in 2018. Now streaming all three half-hour episodes on BBC iPlayer, a short-but-sweet binge.

The story takes place in Belfast and centres around Mick (Nathan Quinn-O’Rawe) who wakes up one day to discover a lump of his left testicle! After losing his dad to motor-neuron disease Mick is worried he might be seeing the first signs in him. Despite Mick’s not so small problem, he is determined to carry on with teenage life and pursing his crush Rachael (Jessica Reynolds). After a date with Rachael, set up by his mate Tommy (Oliver Anthony), Mick gets flustered when she goes to touch his dick knowing she will grope his balls first! He is saved by the bell as his sister arrives to pick him up. Later the next day at school the rumour spreads about Mick and Rachael and he is given the nickname ‘Mick the Dick’! Once Mick sets the rumours straight, he wins back Rachael.

Meanwhile, Mick’s mum Patricia (Sinead Keenan) suspects something is wrong with Mick from his unusual behaviour. Mick confessed to finding a lump, supportively Patricia goes to the doctors with him and they await the results. Later that evening, Mick gets drunk at a party hoping to lose his virginity to Rachael as this might be his last chance. He ends up blurting out that he has cancer but before knowing the results. Speaking of which, it is not cancer but an inflamed testicle with excess fluid. There is so much more I could say about the storyline and it is done so well to fit it into 3 half hour episodes! Like most BBC Three content, My Left Nut will leave you laughing and thinking. An educational undertone for sexual health, but altogether a well-rounded Irish gem!

My Left Nut makes me think and makes me laugh! This short-but-sweet series focuses on the series topic of testicular cancer but adds in humour to make the moments of drama even more hard-hitting. Additionally, the romance between Mick and Rachael is beautifully awkward and oddly refreshing. The male version of Derry Girls (Channel 4, 2018-)! My Left Nut is comical, moving and lovable.
