I Am Not Okay With This (2020) REVIEW - 💎💎💎

Adapted from a Charles Forsman graphic novel, I’m Not Okay With This was created by the makers behind Stranger Things (Netflix) and Director of End of the F***ing World (EOTFW)(Channel 4) Jonathan Entwistle. The opening scene of Sydney (Sophia Lillis) running towards the camera drenched in blood is a haunting image, but a honourable homage to Carrie (1976). We soon discover that Sydney’s dad has recently passed away by taking his own life in the family basement and leaving Sydney grieving and lost. Since moving to a new town Sydney befriends Dina (Sofia Bryant), however Dina’s attention is elsewhere when she becomes girlfriend to Jock Brad (Richard Ellis). Sydney, through a mixture of jealousy and adolescent angst, manages to give Brad a nosebleed. This is where it starts to get interesting! Stanley (Wyatt Oleff), who Sydney has been spending time with due to Diana’s friendship absence, discovers Sydney’s telekinetic powers and helps her control them. Meanwhile, Sydney, whose home life is in turmoil since her dad’s death, is in constant conflict with her mum who puts pressure in Sydney to cook, clean and buy groceries. Sydney’s when put in a corner for too long lets loose, blasting traffic signs off their posts, blowing holes in walls and knocking down multiple trees in woods! It’s safe to say Sydney is a bad ass mother f***er!

As the series progresses it’s clear that Sydney as well as harbouring her telekinesis secret also suppresses her sexuality and desire for best friend Diana. To make things even more complex Sydney discovers her dad had the same powers as her! I’m Not Okay With This, is wonderfully awkward and weirdly scary. A sense of nostalgia for classic horror fans but a refreshing take on teenage angst with the aesthetic and unique style of EOFTW. A stream-worthy binge you could complete in less than a day!

I Am Not Okay With This is an endearing look at adolescence, with the addition of telekinesis! A wonderful homage to Carrie with a modern twist. Entwistle does a terrific job with giving this teenage series its own unique flair and style, however this is very similar to EOTFW and for that reason feels like it is trying too hard to be the American version, which I am not a fan of. Having said that the friendships and relationships are beautifully awkward. I Am Not Okay With This is endearing, awkward and angsty!

Avaliable on Netflix Now.
