Glow Up (2020) REVIEW - 💎💎💎💎

(May Contain Spoilers)

I am such a huge fan of GLOW UP! To be honest, I did watch series 1 because I knew Ellis (who won!) because he is my best-friends fiance so I thought it’d be rude not to, but ended up loving the concept anyway all the way to series 2.

For those of you wanting to watch a great factual format show that will have you hooked and wanting to binge watch the whole season, then GLOW UP will be for you!

The Concept:

A number of make up artists (MUA’s) compete each week in two challenges, the first being an industry challenge where the MUA work with the top names in the business, from Lion King to Strictly Come Dancing and even Harrods! The MUA’s are given a brief and whoever performs the least well ends up in the face-off chair and at risk of elimination.

What is the face off chair? Well the second weekly challenge is the creative brief, where the MUA’s are given a brief by the judges i.e. create a club kid look or look based on the elements (fire, wind e.c.t.). The two MUA’s that are least impressed in the industry brief will be put into the red chairs, which means they have 15 minutes less time than everyone else to complete their looks, however, if their look impresses the judges they have a chance of getting out the chair. The last two MUA’s in the red chairs will go into the face-off.

The face-off is the MUA’s last chance of survival, they are tasked with a specific, technical look, like a smokey eye or ombre lip. The MUA who fails is of course then eliminated and this continues each week until there is a top three.

This season I guessed my top three and they were:

  1. Hannah

  2. James

  3. Ophelia

And I was half right, but it was Eve instead of Hannah. My favourite was Ophelia and she did of course win!

The series was just as great as the last, the challenges were still interesting and they worked with even bigger names for the industry briefs this time around which added interest. One contestant quit because it was too stressful, but apart from that everyone seems nice to one another in the competition, which is something you don’t always see. A feel-good watch that will have you wanting to pick up your brush and experiment.

Stream series 1 & 2 on BBC iPlayer & Netflix.
