Dead To Me (2020) REVIEW - 💎💎💎

Updated: May 26, 2020

(May Contain Spoilers)

I was so excited for series 2, because I was such a big fan of series 1 and the ending was so suspenseful, I was looking forward to how the makers would progress the storyline into another series. I wasn’t disappointed! The thing that really gets me about this series is near misses, those moments where someone leaves just as the other person turns up and the audience screams at the TV, yup, there were a few times that happened! I loved how this series explored the relationship between Judy (Linda Cardellini) and Jen (Christina Applegate), because that is what made series 1 so interesting.

A little recap from Series 1:

Jen is grieving for her late husband, who got killed in a hit and run accident, when she meets Judy. It is later revealed that Judy was the person who ran over Jen’s husband, but Judy was forced to keep it a secret by her Fiancé, Steve (James Marsden). Jen and Judy still develop a friendship despite this secret, ending the series with Steve coming to threaten Jen, who, out of rage, attacks and kills Steve.

…Now you are caught up.

Series two starts right where we left off. Jen, however, tells Judy that Steve was strangling and trying to attack her, so it was self-defence, which is later revealed not to be true, but Judy still forgives Jen for it. The whole series follows Judy and Jen as they try to get rid of Steve’s body and the evidence, which meant burying his body in the woods and burning his car, oh that is after Jen’s son, Charlie (Sam McCarthy), steals it out the

garage and goes on a joy ride. Meanwhile Judy begins to develop a relationship with Michelle (Natalie Morales) who also happens to be the ex and current roommate of Detective Perez (Diana Maria Riva), who is investigating Judy’s claim that Steve was laundering money in his business and working with Greek mafia. The biggest twist, which I thought toned the series down a notch was Steve’s identical brother, Ben (James Marsden), who turns up at Jen’s house and later develops romantic connections with Jen.

After the build up of burying Steve’s body and his family putting out a reward, it all becomes a bit too much for Jen who goes to Perez’s door and confesses that she killed Steve. They go to the woods that they buried the body, but after not finding him they turn back, Jen bursts into tears and has a heart-to-heart with Perez about loosing her mother and her sons losing her. Perez, who also lost her mother, sympathises with Jen, and decides to let her go and not speak of there interaction again. Despite being happy and planning trips away, Judy and Jen get into a car crash with Ben, although he doesn’t see and quickly drives off as her was drink driving, which is where the series finished.

I felt like there was some great moments in this series and both performances from Cardellini and Applegate are glorious, there interactions together are TV gold! This series were got to see how Judy dealt with grief, similar series 1 with Jen. I feel like the series hasn’t lost any of it’s original flare, however the plot twists in series 1 were unpredictable and made it bingeworthy, comparable to this series, they were either too far fetched or predictable. On the whole, however, I enjoyed the series, the performances and where the storyline went and am looking forward to another series to see what happens as Steve’s body has now presumably been found by a dog and jogger! Perez will become corrupt no doubt and Jen and Judy will deal with the world is a slightly odd fashion. Bingeworthy, entertaining and Witty.

Stream series 1 & 2 on Netflix now.
