American Gods (2019) REVIEW - 💎💎

(May Contain Spoilers)

Well, where do I start?! Series one was a head fuck at the best of times, but series two made very little progression or ach during the whole entire 8, 1-hour episodes! The best things to come out of this series was Laura Moon (Emily Browning) and Mad Sweeney (Pablo Schreiber) getting it on and developing feelings for one another. The biggest plot twist – which wasn’t a twist as we all guessed this from series one - Mr Wednesday/Odin (Ian McShane) is Shadow Moon’s (Ricky Whittle) father making Shadow a demi-god. The never beginning battle, guess what?!... Didn’t begin! The new gods barley did anything apart from hack some computers and send out emojis after Media (Kahyun Kim) reinvents herself.

Summed up, the series focused mostly centres around the funeral home in Cairo, whilst Mr Wednesday still tries to recruit old gods to participate in his war. Laura continues to rot from the inside out but trusts Mr Wednesday over Mad Sweeney and goes with Wednesday to have her coin re charged. Laura soon finds out that Wednesday was not going to give her a life, so she travelled to New Orleans to meet Mad Sweeney and get a life. During this venture Laura shagged the voodoo guys, whilst Mad Sweeney got with the voodoo’s wife, but somehow began to have a spiritual bang with Laura. The potion the voodoo guy gave Laura was almost complete, but she needed to get two blood drops from someone who loved her to complete it before she drank. We see at the end of the series Laura walk away with Mad Sweeney’s body, who was killed trying to murder Wednesday and can only predict in the next series she will give the potion to Sweeney to bring him back to life.

We did get to know more about Mad Sweeney’s life and that he was a king and got a cruise put on him to lose his mind, where he got the Mad prefix to his name. We also learnt more about Shadow’s upbringing and met his mother. There are stories about black empowerment and tales of a history of racism, which is great to see on a high-end TV series to have a diverse cast discussing these matters, however nothing ever comes of it. The series felt, much like the first, where situations or characters were introduced without much more explanation on them or their story. For example, Anubis (Chris Obi) was a black man who was hung in the town of Cairo and felt betrayed by his race so cursed them, we then see him haunting Shadow, but nothing else comes of it or is linked back up. There is little heart, meaning or emotion in this series and is just an empty watch, very dissatisfying.

Not a series to watch if you don’t like a plot that’s doesn’t progress throughout the hours you have sat there to watch it, eight hours of my life I won’t get back. I felt the cinematography was nice, but not as nice as the first series, this could be due to the show being in-between creators at the time and so the authorship of the story was lost and confused. I recommend you to watch paint dry instead of wasting time watching this series. Empty, confusing and disappointing.

If you do wish to watch series 2 of American Gods, it is avaliable to stream on Amazon Prime now.
