The Old Guard (2020) REVIEW - 💎💎💎

(May Contain Spoilers)

When I first watched this film I thought it was going to be another action film, like Extraction (2020), but it was a little different, because there was the added element of Sci-fi, which was unusual. I actually preferred Extraction for the storyline, which was a little bit more like Taken (2008). I didn’t even think the action scenes in this were that great, compared to Extraction who had the one continuous take that had me jumping up and down on the chair!

First, we met Andy (Charlize Theron), a tough looking woman who meets with a friend who asks her help on a mission. Andy then meets up with two other friends at a hotel and the ‘crew’ are back together again and they go off to this mission, but are set up. When they are all shot down, it is only seconds later that they recover and are back battling the opposition, this then proves that they are immortal and the story thereafter reveals that the group are ancient immortals who have been saving the earth for years. Now they have been discovered a British scientist wants to harvest their DNA to make profit on their immortality.

As well as this a combat marine, recently killed in duty recovers and has been given the immortal powers. Andy then has to go after Nile (Kiki Layne) and train her and convince her to go with them and survive. The film is then a cat-and-mouse storyline where the mercenaries run from the lab people and even when they are caught they escape and the film ends on a ‘you’re going to help save the earth’ sort of thing.

I found the film quite disappointing for an action film and considering the idea derives from a comic there were no signs of this in the film, which I think it could have done with. I love Theron but the character was played quite plain and boring considering it is an ancient warrior, but apart from saying how many people she has saved there wasn’t much more backstory to her and it was all left a mystery, which was also quite disappointing. An interesting mix of genre, but one that I don’t particularly think worked and with the action scenes not being anything extraordinary.

Stream now on Netflix.
