Isolation Watchlist

Updated: Apr 21, 2020

1. The Simpsons Movie (2007)

The Simpsons hometown Springfield has risen levels of toxic waste and pollution cause the government to lock down the city, by putting a massive glass dome over them. The city start to go insane! I chose The Simpsons Movie to take the No.1 slot because, their glass dome could be where this pandemic will take us! This film is a comedy classic and with The Simpsons historic predictions, this 2007 film could well show us our potential fate. A funny, family comedy is my No.1MUSTwatch during isolation.

2. Contagion (2011)

I recently watched Contagion as it was recommended to me and during the Coronavirus it couldn't be more accurate! There is a disease that is contagious (lol the title gave that away) and it is transmitted through touch and coughing. People are asked to self-isolate. Luckily they DO create a vaccine, so there is a happy ending, however it does make you think if a film created in 2011 predicted a worldwide pandemic, that has now come true almost identical, why it took so long for some countries to make the necessary procedures. Scary, but a honest representation of where we are and where we could be going.

3. Friday Night Dinner (2011-) - Channel 4

If comedy is the best medicine, then this sitcom series will be what you need! Friday Night Dinner is about Jewish family, the Goodman’s, who come together once a week to spend quality time together, however it does not always run as smoothly as mother, Jackie (Tamsin Greig) would like! A definite binge watch series to get your teeth into. All episodes are available on All 4 and the series has just dropped so hurry now!

4. Oh! What a Lovely War (1969)

An underrated film! Oh! What a Lovely War was made in 1969 and directed by Richard Attenborough, the film was based on the musical by the same name. This beautiful, visual piece of work comments on the events of World War 1 and    takes tragic situations and turns them into light-hearted jokes and wonderful sing-along songs, making the moments of drama even more hard hitting.  This film can educate us on a lot of things, including making light of situations, which I think Britain’s do best. A MUST SEE!

5. Odd One Out (2019) - BBC Three

This documentary follows Little Mix member, Jesy Nelson, as she recalls her experience with social media and cyberbullies. Nelson also investigates other cases of social media bullying, which have had a less successful ending. Odd One Out demonstrates the harmful impact that social media and trolls can have on our lives. Even now, more than ever, because of isolation we NEED to be kinder to ourselves AND others. A reminder that mental health matters. Avaliable now onBBC3.

6. Black Mirror (2011-) Netflix

Scarily accurate, this anthology series evaluates modern technologies impact on society, set in an alternative present or near future. This thought-provoking series has great production quality, there are 5 series and even an interactive film called Bandersnatch, which can also be found on Netflix, getting you to interact and make the choices of the characters. A bingeworthy series for the isolation period.

7. Ex-Machina (2014)

A Sci-Fi film a young programmer, Caleb (Domhnall Gleeson), who is employed to participate in an experiment and examining the human qualities of advance AI robots. Humanoid Ava (Alicia Vikander) is trapped in a glass box and later through lots of tests becomes self-aware and wants to escape. I think we all feel a little bit trapped and helpless at the moment, BUT this film will show you that you should take the opportunity to go outside, get some fresh air and enjoy your freedom.

8. Ingrid Goes West (2017)

Ingrid (Aubrey Plaza) is a social media addict, who stalks people online in an attempt to become their friend. She begins to follow influencer Taylor (Elizabeth Olsen) on Instagram and moves to Los Angeles in an attempt to befriend her idol. I only watched this last night and you can find a full review >> HERE <<. I have added this to my isolation watchlist, because it shows the impact social media can make to your life and if you push that too far, like Ingrid, you will come to a demise! An indie, feelgood film, with a great cast and only 1hr 38 mins long! An enjoyable late night watch.

9. The Shinning (1980)

This Stanley Kubrick horror classic is a Stephen King adaptation (so you know it is going to be good!) Jack (Jack Nicholson) an aspiring writer and recovering alcoholic retreats with his family to an isolated hotel to take employment as a temporary caretaker. Jack’s son Danny (Danny Lloyd), however, has the physic abilities to see the terrifying past of the hotel’s residents including the previous caretaker who went mad and killed his family. So, I guess you can see where this one is going! I choose this horror classic because of Nicholson’s amazing performance and because it demonstrates how being with your family in a confident space could send you a little mad! Just don’t end up like Jack!

10. Russian Doll (2019-) Netflix

Feel like you’re living the same day over and over again?! Yeah, it can feel a little bit like that at the moment in isolation. Russian Doll can relate! This groundhog day series follows Nadia (Natasha Lyonne) as she gets stuck in a time loop, re-living the same day over and over AND OVER again, luckily for her it is at a party! She tries to escape, but will she ever get out this black hole? Binge it and find out!
